What is Inference?

In AI, inference is the process where a trained model makes predictions or decisions based on new data. After an AI model is trained (learning from examples), inference is how it applies what it learned to answer questions, label images, translate languages, or do other tasks. For example, when you ask a chatbot a question, it uses inference to decide what to say. It happens quickly, often behind the scenes, and is what makes AI useful in real life.

Tell your child that inference is what AI does when it tries to figure something out using what it already knows. The AI has learned a lot, and now it's using that learning to answer a question or do something smart.

Imagine you studied really hard for a spelling test. On the test day, when you see a word, you use what you learned to spell it. That moment of remembering and writing the word—that’s like inference. The AI is like a student who studied and now has to use what it knows to solve a problem.
