What is System Prompt?

A system prompt is the set of instructions or guidelines given to an AI to tell it how to behave or what role to play. It sets the tone, rules, and goals before any conversation starts.

Think of it as the AI's behind-the-scenes guide. It might say things like “explain things simply” or “be polite,” and it also includes safety rules to prevent the AI from saying anything harmful, offensive, or inappropriate. To explain a system prompt to a child, say it's like a list of rules and instructions someone gives before starting a game or activity. It tells the AI how to act and also what things it should never say or do, to keep everyone safe and happy.

Imagine your teacher gives you a worksheet and says, “Do your best work, write neatly, and don't copy from anyone.” That's like a system prompt: it gives you a clear idea of what's expected and reminds you to follow the rules so everything goes smoothly and fairly.
